Bringing Scarborough's history to life!

There are maps from 1725 and 1798 - amongst others - , as well as one from the early 20th century indicating where the Bombardment shells hit Scarborough on December 16 1914.

Check the box of the map you wish to view, and it'll overlay onto present day Scarborough; simply choose which trail you want and you're able to see just how much - or how little! - has changed over the past 300 years.

This route explores the various theatre venues which existed in Scarborough over the past 300 years. Many are long gone, but you can imagine what it used to be like.

This is a linear trail, starting at the Open Air Theare and ending near the train station. There are no steps, but there are some steep slopes. Access to the seafront for the Arcadia / Futurist / Spa may be via the slopes at St Nicholas Gardens, or using the Cliff Lift.

This circular trail includes important aspects which have helped to define the town and area, from the Jurassic Coast to the impact of Ice Age glaciers in forming the shape of the town.

The route starts at the top of a woodland, and goes down towards the sea. It follows the line of the coast before coming back up, and along the cliff top to return to the starting point.

Start at the Clock Tower on South Cliff, and follow the cliff line down through the ornamental gardens before moving along the seafront, round the headland, and ending at Scalby Mills.

You'll explore the development of the seaside and the incredible feat of engineering which is the Marine Drive, as well as looking at some of the popular fashions of the day- woolly trunks, anyone?

This trail follows the points of military significance in the town, particularly in relation to the Bombardment of December 16, 1914.

Starting at Scalby Mills, the circular route takes in the barracks, castle, and foreshore, as well as identifying points of interest where the shells fell on that day. 

You'll time travel in this trail, starting in what used to be the separate village of Falsgrave before meandering along the road, passing through the point of the original Bar, and then down the hill to the old smuggler's haunts.

Starting in The Crescent, you'll meanders past many of the fabulous coffee shops and boutiques Scarborough has to offer - everything from cake to fossils, with pretty much anything and everything in-between!

Take a walk through the commercial history of the town, with maybe a treat or two on the way...
